Andrew Riddell, 17, and Matthew Honea, 18, were well-known at Olathe South High School for their humor and friendly nature. They spent a lot of time together...
For Honea and Riddell, life had meaning.
It was never a dull moment with Matthew, said Joe Honea, Matthews father. He was very exciting to be around.
They spent time making classmates smile, friends laugh, and their parents proud.
I remember one time I told him I was disappointed in him and he was just so devastated, Riddell said. He did everything he could to make us proud and he just never let us down.
Last fall, Matthew Honea graduated high school early. He planned to go to culinary school, travel the world on cruise ships, then come home and become a social worker.
He was someone who loved life, loved his friends and wanted to spend as much time with them as he could, Joe Honea said.
Andrew was close to graduating. He was involved in tennis, baseball and many other activities. He dreamed of joining the U.S. Navy to become search and rescue diver.
He was just a great kid, Dan Riddell said. You couldnt ask for a better guy.
Monday night, they went to a party. Afterwards, around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, the teens got into a car with an older friend. That friend was driving them home.
Witness told NBC Action News the car was speeding near 151st and Metcalf. One block east, the car crashed into a pole, flipped, then burst into flames.
Good Samaritans pulled the driver out alive. He is in critical condition.
The Honea's said thoughts of their son and the way he lived brings them a measure of comfort.
He did live life how he wanted to and he enjoyed every minute of it, Im sure. Joe Honea said
Matthew Taylor Honea, age 18, passed away March 16, 2010, in Overland Park, KS.
Matthew was born November 27, 1991, in Shawnee Mission, KS to Joseph and Anne-Marie Honea. Matthew loved spending time with Kathy and many friends. Matthew is survived by his parents. He is also survived by his long-time devoted girlfriend, Kathy Summers, and a host of loving friends.
"He loved to cook and he loved sushi," said Joe Honea. "And he wanted to go to culinary school."
Honea said his son Matt was an extraordinary young man.
"We think if Matthew was alive, he would discourage us from prosecuting Ben(the driver) or inflicting more pain on him," Honea said. "I know that Matt would not want that."
~Our hearts are broken & full of sorrow and we will miss you always...
~me~ We were friends since i was 5 or 6 years old. I miss him terribly, but he lives on in my heart. I keep thinking that he's gonna turn up one day and laugh and say "i got ya." That was his humor. I prayed for days and days that that was the case.
I will say this in Matthew's memory... Don't get in the car with a drunk driver. Call a friend or a guardian of some sort. When you're in the car with an intoxicated driver, you put your entire life in their hands. Don't take that chance. Please. We don't need any more deaths because of intoxicated driving. God Bless and Bless God. We all love and miss you so much Matthew
