hin Erivan, right next to opera. i got to make a correction. the instrument is not kanoun, its kanon, and is pronounced kanon, but not kanun or kanoun.

Well I stand corrected then, but I have been all over Eastern Europe and Central Asia and heard a few variations on this depending on the country. I am in the Republic of Georgia right now, which borders Armenia to the north.

Would this have been played as court music in old Armenia. I am trying to imagine the situation in which this piece would have been played. (Sorry , no historical imagination.)

I suppose it was (and is) common throughout the region, anywhere where people gather to eat, drink, dance and party. It's been around for many centuries.
