Imagine having dinner in Yerevan, Armenia (as I did a few days ago) and sitting 5 feet in front of this amazing beauty who plays her instrument with such virtuosity. The kanoun she plays is the predecessor of the piano, it has 72 strings which are tuned in sets of three. Listening to it, I am sure that it is tuned to some interesting scale (like a harmonic minor), but I am not sure. Other instuments include the Oud (Lute) and there are two guys playing the Duduk, a double-reed instrument, where one guy drones (think bagpipe) while the other plays melody. The Kemenche (fiddle) player was really into his craft, and not shown was a guy playing the Dhol(drum).

  • music gave me a headache..

  • you need to drink more Armenian wine and then your attitude will change

  • hin Erivan, right next to opera. i got to make a correction. the instrument is not kanoun, its kanon, and is pronounced kanon, but not kanun or kanoun.

  • Well I stand corrected then, but I have been all over Eastern Europe and Central Asia and heard a few variations on this depending on the country. I am in the Republic of Georgia right now, which borders Armenia to the north.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • kinda like tomato and potato, I just know that I liked sitting there watching this.

  • Would this have been played as court music in old Armenia. I am trying to imagine the situation in which this piece would have been played. (Sorry , no historical imagination.)

  • I suppose it was (and is) common throughout the region, anywhere where people gather to eat, drink, dance and party. It's been around for many centuries.
