MacDonald's buzzer beater puts Rams into post-season

The Ryerson Rams women's basketball team clinched a playoff berth as it defeated the visiting Carleton Ravens 63-61 on a last second shot at Kerr Hall Friday night.

The Ravens tied the score at 61 with only four seconds to play before Ashley MacDonald (Port Colborne, Ont.) hit the game-winner with less than a second on the clock.

The Rams led the game for the first three quarters before Carleton went on a run to even the score going into the fourth. The two teams traded points for much of the final quarter before Ryerson hit the final shot for the two-point victory.

Lacey O'Sullivan (Port Colborne, Ont.) led the way for Ryerson offensively, pouring in 16 points and grabbing five rebounds. MacDonald and Rebecca Cox (Renfrew, Ont.) netted nine points each for Ryerson, while Angela Tilk (Welland, Ont.) added eight in the win. Lisa Goldring (Burlington, Ont.) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Ravens were led by Kelly Killoran (Sarnia, Ont.) who scored a game-high 17 points powered off of five three-pointers. Ashleigh Cleary (Kemptville, Ont.) was also strong for Carleton, netting 14 points, while Ines Jelic (London, Ont.) added 13 points.

Ryerson outshot the Ravens from the floor, 41.3 percent to 38.8 percent, while the Ravens held the advantage from beyond the arc, 44.4 percent to 33.3 percent. Carleton also grabbed more boards than Ryerson, 30-25 while the Rams won the turnover battle, 23-14.

"I was very excited for our team effort, we hung in there and got the win," said Rams head coach Sandra Pothier. She also added that it was nice to finally be on the winning side of a close game.

With the win the Rams record improves to 9-10 as they clinch a playoff berth for the second straight year. Carleton sees its record drop to 12-7 with the loss. Ryerson is in action on Saturday against the Ottawa Gee-Gees (12-7) who lost to Toronto (14-5) on Friday night.
