"When sterling silver is heated, a dark, penetrating oxide forms called firescale, which is difficult to remove.
When Argentium is heated, germanium migrates to the surface, creating a germanium oxide layer. If you watch carefully, you can actually see the layer forming. It goes from shiny to a frosty white. This layer forms before the copper can oxidize, leaving the Argentium firescale free.

I have cleaned both surfaces and placed them on a charcoal block to demonstrate the fire scale free properties of Argentium compared to sterling. You can see the fire scale forming on the sterling and not the Argentium.
A way to tell if your metal is sterling or Argentium is to simply heat it. If it is sterling it will turn black and the Argentium won't."
