Founded by Alexander the Great in 330 BC, Herat's famous citadel has seen its fair share of war and destruction. But today, the imposing fortification has been completely restored with Afghan and international money and labour and stands as a new symbol of pride in the ancient city.

Alexandria in Ariana was a city in what is now present-day Afghanistan, one of the twenty-plus cities founded or renamed by Alexander the Great. The third largest Afghan city, Herat, is the city's modern name.

In 330BC the Greek armies of Alexander, moved the capital of the satrap of Aria from Artacoana to the site of Herat. In doing this he expanded an existing Persian fortress.

Pliny places it on the river Arias and Eratosthenes places it nearby, while Ptolemy places it near a Lake Arius.

Hmmm...it doesn't - if thay will be able to protect foreign turists it may became a stable source of money. I don't mean just this museum, but there are many other places like this one in Afghanistan.
