Ever since the Golf GTI was launched four decades ago, it has become one of the most formidable names in the car industry. The all-new sixth-generation GTI, which will arrive on Irish shores in Spring 2009, promises to be the best one yet. So what changes can we expect to see over the current model? In terms of style, the new car isnt hugely different, but get up close and you really start to notice the changes. Most notably, the GTI has gained new headlights, wraparound sideskirts and smoked rear light lenses. The distinctive 18-inch telephone dial wheels from the Mark V GTI make a return, albeit in subtly evolved form. Engine-wise, the GTI retains the same 2.0-litre power plant for 2009, but gains an extra 10bhp. Tree-huggers will be happy to note that despite having increased power, the GTI is also far cleaner than before, emitting only 178g/km. of CO2. Thanks to all of the aforementioned improvements, its quicker out of the blocks than the Mark V, taking only 7.2 seconds to go from 0-100km/h, and maxing out at an incredible 238km/h! But thats not all. The new GTI boasts a host of changes to its drivetrain and chassis. Specially tuned springs, dampers and anti-roll bars are joined by the option of Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC), which includes adjustable dampers. With three settings ranging from comfort to normal and sport, the ACC system also remaps the GTIs steering and throttle response to offer either sharp dynamics and body control or smoothness and comfort whilst driving. There are more handling improvements in the shape of a new electronic LSD linked to a sophisticated ESP system in order to maximise traction. Inside, a flat-bottomed steering wheel wrapped in black leather and new contoured sports seats finished in grey tartan cloth to top things off. For more information log onto www.cbg.ie

  • The idea that people only 21 or older can drive fast cars is a good idea. I don't think it should be enforced though, I just think people need to not be dumbasses
