Dan, I can't see in the video clearly, do you mark first the cut-outs with pencil? I could never do such a precise job without some guides.

Hi,no markings apart from a slight scratched ring you can see half way between the 2 bands of colour, to make sure the 1st row are the same height.Then I just keep going round and when they almost meet at the other side just adjust the size a little if needed to make them fit.

Dan, I have trouble with things like this cracking during drying. Do you cover these for a long time, or perhaps I am making the "struts" too narrow/thin? Ed

These can crack as the top dries out far quicker than the rest so I just cover in polythene and let it dry out slowly somewhere cool.
That seems to do the trick.
