@LYNDONGOLDEN omg did you live in millgarden south (subdivision) in virginia?? my house was built in 1982 and when we moved here 10 years ago there was this same smoke alarm and i think there was one interconnected to another one the previous owners had removed and put a cover over the hole

I moved into a new neighborhood in 1982, where all the new homes had these scary-sounding detectors. I recall how all of my elementary school friends would test these things (when Moms and Dads weren't home) just so we could scream and cover our ears.

Boy I remember having one of these in my house in 1979, they were loud and people still use this old school model to this day. I bet that Firex smoke detector is about my age around 32 years old.
