Dedicated to a new friend of mine - a young mother seeking real comfort as the cold fingers of death threaten to pull her away from her beautiful young twins.

Religion can comfort people. But the comfort of religion is a poor substitute for the real comfort that comes from a natural relationship with the present - with the 'now'.

@drfoxcourt you are mistaken. I said Hitler was a theist, not an atheist. I believe that we are in agreement about what motivates tyrants. Of course, because I mentioned Hitler in the thread Godwin's law is automatically invoked and I lose the argument. ;)

@ebullock43 Oh stop with the Hitler was an atheist. One serious read of Mien Kampf will tell you that ain't so.

As for the other infamous atheists (Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot....), they didn't do the horrible things they did out of a LACK of belief in a supreme being, they did it out of a belief in dogma, power, and/or failure to understand the basics of decent behavior.
