[Please read] Gape at some pert, hip-bumping hootchy-kootchy in the 1951 Universal Picture LITTLE EGYPT. Dancing in the title role is Rhonda Fleming, an attractive and skilled "exotica" actress who appeared in many adventure-type films of the 1950s.

The real-life "Little Egypt" gained notoriety for her belly-dance performance(s) on the Midway at the 1893 World's Fair/Columbian Exposition held in Chicago, Illinois. Her actual name was Farida Mazar Spyropoulos. She was Syrian. The film LITTLE EGYPT dramatizes the "scandal" associated with this bit of history. The film is part frustration and part bore. Evidence: the unconvincing romance brewed between "Izora" (Fleming) and "Wayne Cravat" (Mark Stevens from, more notably, the Fox noir THE STREET WITH NO NAME); the most lethargic, pedantic courtroom scene imaginable that gracelessly gobbles up a significant chunk of screen time; and, generally speaking, the mediocre production values. The film is also part "fun factor"--and that begins and ends with a beauty like Rhonda dancing. Enjoy.

Note to the conscientious viewer: you will observe a few black/blank screen spots in the early part of this YouTube video. They are present by design. They helped me to sync the superimposed soundtrack music with the dance. Now you know!

If it hasn't occurred by the time you read this...

...although I wouldn't be able to fathom your interest extending beyond these YouTube clips of it:...would you like to see LITTLE EGYPT restored and released on DVD? Please petition the studio!

Thanks for viewing! I enjoyed giving Rhonda's sexy appearance in LITTLE EGYPT a little sunlight on YouTube.

  • Rhonda was definitely no belly dancer, but this was pretty hot stuff for 1951. She must have been the subject of many a young boy's steamy fantasies.

Does anyone know the source of the non-soundtrack music at the beginning and end of this video?

  • I like her dance(Rhonda's) in this film. It should be made into DVD. If it is made, I would like to buy one. Also her dance in "Queen of Babylon". She is quite a great actress.

  • As seen at the beginning of this posting, the REAL "Little Egypt" looked nothing like Rhonda, and her "scandulous" dancing and attire in the 1890's were slightly exaggerated for the "Hollywood version" of her story. What was "sordid" over a hundred years ago is quite innocent {and somewhat quaint} today.

"Wayne Cravat"...who was the his tailor, "Henry Tuxedo"?

    ;)

  • Pleased to be teased by Rhonda Fleming - yea current day crowd might call this corny - but its such a GOOD corny.

  • Well... she ain't LITTLE and she ain't EGYPTIAN ! LOL ! But she IS gorgeous !!

    thanks for posting !

    Your buddy , Dave

  • Thanks for the post! A belly dancer she ain't, but it's still fun.

  • Another wonderful videoclip, northbreed1. In my last message i said i should like to run off with Debra Paget, but i think i shall take Rhonda Fleming along too! Ah Well! Dream on!.

  • I prefer big Rhonda as a redhead. My all-time favorite scene of hers was on TV's Wagon Train, in which she makes out w/ a younger Robert Fuller, and I get the feeling she drove him wild in that scene, as they just feast on each other.

  • Oh My Word!! Rhonda was just AWESOME! What a beautiful woman and a great Actress. She is 1 of the truly greats. My only less than sterling comment would be i wished there could have been more closes ups of her and angles that would have shown off her Gorgeous Red hair. But all in all a wonderful video Ty for posting it.
