I won't think that as a copycat, more like a conscious inspiration maybe. Because that how is architect works, we get inspiration from other to create a new one.
@georgewu5 ...so you're saying he's a "COPYCAT"...if you had half a brain you would understand how absurd that is!!! DESIGNS CAN"T BE COPIED!!! Even if he did copy...how about the plans and volumes and space orientation...DID HE COPY THAT TOO???
architectural ideas aren't simply looked at and copied...just because your jealous of his ideas...doesn't mean you could lie about him!!!!
@georgewu5 no it wasn't. Peter Eisenman's formalist mobius building was different entirely. Rem Koolhaas' firm doesn't work off of 'changing a little bit' anyone else's work. Besides projects that are directly alluding to past architectural work.. They are probably the hardest working firm in the world.
They are technologically innovative and are constantly studying everything around us.
They develop more models until finalization than any other, for just one building... don't discredit them.
THINK OF THE LARGE LUMP OF THE MASS AT THE TOP, OFF CENTER WITH THE CENTER OF GRAVITY OUTSIDE OF THE TWO LEGS.
NOW IMAGINE AN EARTHQUAKE NEARBY BEIJING ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO HAPPENS HERE TOMORROW, HOW IS THE PENDULUM GOING TO SWING? 100,000 +TONS OF EARTHQUAKE FORCE WOULD MAKE THE PENDULUM SWING BACK BUT CANNOT BE BACK . SO WHAT HAPPENS? THE BUILDING WILL BREAK -THE WEAKEST TOP ,LIKE A WISH BONE BREAKING! A PERSON WITH ANY COMMON SENSE WOULD NOT DO CCTV THIS WAY! GEORGE WU, AIA 2010-7-3
BUT THE CCTV BUILDING DESIGN WAS A DESIGN BY A JEWISH ARCHITECT PETER EISENMAN WHO PUBLISHED YEARS AGO. KOOLHAAS JUST CHANGED A LITTLE BIT AND CALLED IT HIS INVENTION! COPY CAT ! ---GEORGE WU, AIA 2010-7-3
i don't understand how this building passes fire regulations. if there are fires at both access routes along the cantilevers to the cores, all tenants there practically become roast meat.
". I would get pretty annoyed if I had to do that every day". I'm sure that the people who work in the CCTV building hate having to work in one of the greatest building marvels in this world. I'm sure that when you're showing your friends this building they're gonna feel sorry for you. I'd much rather work in a plain jane building as well just like you.
@yifanoverthere No idea. It looks to me as a canvas, or window which is relevant since it's a tv station and sections are not just build on top of each other but in a ring, very "socialist". Apart from the fact it looks like a pants on pictures, I think it was a logical choice.
The only weird thing is the accessibility of the upper corner, it looks like a long walk, after a high elevator climb. I would get pretty annoyed if I had to do that every day.
