@billabongditty i'm not a fan either. but i think its because of things like this performance right here. passion. & her voice is simply undeniable, its huge, bright, and she sings with a ton of strength. i personally dont have trouble understanding her. her Mrs Lovett was the only time I actually understood the words :). and the other reason i would assume is the pathological drive "I Will Happen!" that can usually carry a person to any goal they set for themselves. but i feel you. not a fan.

ACTUALLY IF YOU READ HER BOOK PATTI LuPONE A MEMOIR SHE EXPLAINS THAT SHE HAD A DIFFICULT TIME WITH THE SCORE THAT ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER WROTE!! AFTHER SINGING 8 TIMES A WEEK SHE WOULD HAVE TO BE IN VOCAL REST HER FREE DAYS AND AFTHER EVERY SHOW SO SHE COHLD SING THE NEXT PERFORMANCE!!

Can someone please explain why Patti LuPone is such a big name? You can never understand a word she sings and she exudes a full-of-herself-ness that really rankles. And if any of you showboys retort with "But it's Patti LuPone", then you have just lost the right to even talk to me.

@gforcestp The point of the polo match is to show how much influence the British had in Argentina. Upper class Argentines would emulate them in dress and style, and sent their kids to Eton for a proper education. The Brits also controlled the industries and utilities, but when Peron came to power he nationalized them, pretty much kicking the Brits out. The expulsion of the Brits is alluded to in Act II ( "Rainbow Tour," "The Actress Hasn't Learned the Lines," and "She is a Diamond").

@adam4757 Patti addresses that in her memoir. The part can be sung, but only very carefully. At first, she had a lot of trouble with it and throughout the run of the show was getting extra vocal lessons so she could do it right. They had to dumb it down in the movie for Madonna, and generally when it's produced on an 8 show-a-week schedule, an alternate sings the 2 matinee shows so the principal can save her voice.

@NewNickTahoe Here here! This is amazing archival footage, and I don't know how you found it (or what you did to get it), but I'm glad you did. Thank you for posting. Fabulous.

@gavyj5191 I think it was meant to establish the timeframe when Eva arrives in Buenos Aires. But, as someone else said, it also introduces the Argentine artistocracy (the music during the polo match speech is the same music used when the aristocacy criticizes/mocks Eva).

Can someone explain the point of the Polo match monologue to me? Please.

@gavyj5191 for one thing, it serves to introduce the aristocracy in the show, who will be eva's ememies and a rival she tries to but ultimately fails to beat
