Editor of the BE Usergroup, DrSox, recorded this video that compares the broadband speed of BT Total against BE Broadband during peak usage hours. As DrSox said:

"For months I have been frustrated by the performance with downloading Flash Player on BT Internet. Today I finally got a chance to test them side by side and record the results. For your interest, the same test performed earlier in the day at 2:30pm (not peak time) resulted in the full line speed on the BT line. Just in the evening when traffic management kicks in, performance for p2p and (as you see) even legitimate downloads becomes terrible!"

Test performed at 6:51pm on 28th Jan 2010.

  • That's why I like Be, if I'm paying my money I don't expect traffic managing at all. Also the reason why I didn't go for O2 as well.

  • Currently using a BE Broadband connection.

Downloading a 100MB file at a whopping speed of 48kB/sec.

I can't even stream Youtube videos on the lowest quality on this connection. Consistently ludicrously slow; it's like being back on dialup.

By way of comparison, a BT line in the same area gets a download speed of just shy of 2MB/sec.

  • @mikeharry50 Try running the download at 8pm.

  • @arbimd it would have to be phone line. I have a fibre virgin connection and always a 50mb(MEGABITS) speedtest connection and from most sites I often get 5MB/S(MEGABYTES, this is due to certain websites and services like P2P which I can get the full 6.25MB/S often, can't always transmit at the full 6.25MB speed). So compared to a upto 24mb(MEGABIT) connection the virgin fibre would leave Be in their dust.

Be however are THE BEST ADSL broadband in the UK.

  • This is all very well. Unfortunately BE is only fast when you're close to the exchange. I was on BE's highest-speed package - but I rarely got over 1MB/sec! That's why I'm moving to BT Infinity (fibre to the cabinet). Be was good otherwise - but they simply can't deliver the speed when you're not really close to the exchange.

  • do a video for Be Vs Virgin plzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • BT is shit

  • And that is why I left BT for Be. nearly 7 meg during the day, but 1 or less every evening from around 7 pm to around 11.30.

I am so tempted by infinity, but scared of getting 20 meg daytime and still only 1 meg evenings.

  • Good that you have demonstrated the traffic shaping on BT. They are not the only company guilty of this. I recently left Plus Net Business because things like Windows Update and driver download sites were almost unuseable. The general public are being tricked with huge download speeds but in reality that is only between them and their local exchange, after that most companies destroy the connections completely. I moved to AAISP and so far the connection is truly astoinishing!

  • Please do a ping test demonstration as well. use pingtest.net .Also those other videos you uploaded are somewhat retarded.
