Tá an oíche seo dorcha is tá sí fuar,
'Gus tá sí 'goilliúint ar mo chroí go crua;
Mo stór a d'imigh 's nach bhfuil le fáil,
'S a bhéas a' goilliúint orm nó go bhfaighidh mé bás.
'S nach deas an sagairtín é stór mo chroí,
Nach beannaithe an pobal a dtéann (siúlann) sé thríd
Tá branda ó Mhuire aige 'gus séala ó Chríost,
Is tá sé triall chun a choláistí.
Ó éist, a chailín deas is ná sil deoir,
Mar ní dhuitse a rugadh mé ná d'aon bhean beo
Ach baistfidh mé do leanbh dhuit le cúnamh Dé,
'S dhá mbeadh breith ar maiféal a'm, ba leat mé fhéin.
Tháinig (Chuaigh) mé aréir ag an doras úd thall
Lig mé fead uirthi 'gus glórtha ard
Is éard a dúirt a hathair liom nach raibh sí ann
(Nar) Go raibh sí imithe go Meiriceá.]. . .
Dúirt . ,
Sé dúirt a mhathair [Lyrics required]
A Dhia 's a Chríosta, nach mór an feall,
A bheith i ngrá le mnaoi (cailín) 's gan í a'm le fáil.
Ó níl mé tinn agus níl mé slán,
Séard a dúirt mo mhuintir go bhfaighinnse bás
A Dhia 's a Chríosta, nach mór an feall,
A bheith i ngrá le mnaoi (cailín) 's gan í a'm le fáil.
The night is dark and cold
And weighs heavily on my heart;
I will not go home or go on a visit
Until I spend one night with my love.
My boy, little priest, love of my heart,
Happy his people among whom he moves,
bearing Mary's seal and Christ's brand on his brow,
And there's no rose in the garden like unto my love.
This song shares lines and verses with other songs such as Dónal Óg and Tiocfaidh an Samhradh, but the story is unique.
An intriguing song with a mixture of innocence and scandal!

There are a great many other sean-nos singers with no African ancestry who sing in this style. Roisin's mother is from Connemara and a wonderful sean-nos singer in her own right.

The Celts kept no written histories for millennia so you're relying on other civilisations for where they came from they probably came up from Asia minor into Europe and spread out and they have dna links to Celto-iberians including the Basques, some people say this style of singing came from north Africa and if you listen to Berber and other Arabic tribes music it's uncanny the similarity !

The first Irish came from Spain, around the Pyrenees. DNA research shows that. But where did they come from? Through North Africa? After all, we all originated in Africa. The sounds of Irish music don't sound West European to me.

@SLFinSF From what I've read, Roisin's father is a doctor from Egypt.

Ta se go h-alainn ar fad. Aris, aris!!! The sisters have Irish first names but their surname looks Middle Eastern -- and it occurs to me that "sean nos" singing may have some commonalities with middle eastern singing traditions. Does anyone know their heritage -- or if there are commonalities? (I''m not a singer myself!)
