A group of nine Austin-area high school students and two of their teachers will travel to Shanghai in summer 2011 for six weeks to continue their study of the Mandarin Chinese language at East China Normal University (ECNU). The group will travel with the assistance of a grant from the State Department's National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program. Eastside Memorial Global Tech High School (GT) and the International Education Fund (IEF) partnered on the grant application.
Students and their teachers will live in the international dormitory on the campus of ECNU, and will take four hours of daily Mandarin classes. The group also will visit historically significant sites, participate in a range of cultural activities and community service projects, and interact with local Chinese students and host families.
Upon completion, students will earn eight semester hours of transferable college credit, and IEF will work with program alumni to secure relevant local corporate and nonprofit internship and employment placements in summer 2012.
Learning Programs International (LPI), the Austin-area high school study abroad provider founded in 1989, is handling Shanghai program planning and logistics.
