Safety belts remain the single most effective piece of protective equipment in vehicles today, yet 59% of all fatal vehicle crashes that occurred in Ohio during 2007 involved unbelted drivers and passengers. When worn correctly, safety belts have been proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45% and by 60% in pick-up trucks, SUVs and minivans. When safety belts are not used, it costs us all economically, socially, personally and emotionally. In order to increase public awareness, Columbus Public Healths Franklin County Safe Communities in partnership with the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission held the 2009 Click it or Ticket campaign kick-off event in front of the Columbus statehouse. Debbie Coleman from Columbus Public Health along with a variety of community leaders spoke out in support of this initiative.
