How to keep Rory Maclaren as a follower/companion (Fallout 3)

How to keep Rory Maclaren following you after completing Rescue from Paradise. (PC Version)

Although he isn't a companion/follower in the technical sense, you can keep Rory following you throughout the game indefinitely (well, until he dies anyway) by some careful timing and use of fast-travel.

As a follower Rory is fairly weak and easily killed, and because he's not a companion you cannot control him through dialog options. In fact, after completing Rescue from Paradise, Rory will have NO dialog options. The only way to give him items is to reverse-pickpocket them onto him.

Rory can use apparel (including Power Armor) and any weapons you pickpocket onto him, though you will need to fast travel for apparel to equip. Importantly, unlike regular followers, ANY WEAPONS RORY USES DO NOT DEPLETE HIS AMMO SUPPLY. You need only give him the weapon and a single unit of ammo for him to use it.

I've also put together a follow-up video showing off some of the advantages of having Rory as a pseudo-follower. In particular he is well-suited to being given the Chinese Stealth Armor, as his constantly crouched state means that he will always be cloaked until he stands to attack. what method did you use to "clear the path"

@TacticalCrab: There is no non-violent way to get Rory out of Paradise Falls alive. The Slavers between The Box and the exit MUST be killed; if they are alive, Rory will attack them.

And because I can't say this enough: TAKE RORY OUT OF THE BOX BEFORE YOU START KILLING EVERYONE. Even being perfectly silent while killing Slavers they will sometimes go hostile, which will immediately kill Rory if he is in The Box. You can safely stash him in the nearby bathroom while you rampage.

what happens to him when you start a dlc? will he follow you, or leave? can you get him back?

You don't have to finish the quest, if you want the trophy save then finish and load it. That way you can tell him to wait. It's way better when you need to go to a dangerous place and don't want him killed.

actually it is possible, just read the tips on the wiki page for Fallout. quite a bit of effort to save him though.
