Dude, you gotta learn to check the recruit tab... There you can get people for litterally no money.
and dont you have numpad? its much easier to control with it.

@Euqris: i use a labtop, so no numbad :-(
but the recriut tab i use all the time, its just that i needed a farmers badly so i trained him.... though as you point out: its not cheap to train, but you are sure that you get what you want
