The plant family Fabaceae is the legume or pea family. There are over 19,000 species in this family within 730 genera. The largest and most diverse genus is the Astragalus with over 2,000 species. Astragalus is found worldwide, mainly in arid regions.
There are many plants of economic importance in this family including beans, peas, alfalfa and peanuts. It also includes poisonous and toxic plants such as Astragalus, commonly called loco weed.
