a little video showing how to change the root password for ubuntu without even being logged into the computer, need to get access to a ubuntu box without knowing the login try this, simple little trick using recovery to change root password
i need your help, my parents locked me out of my computer, i am currently running ubuntu. my brother (the one who set this all up) told me they're are ways to getting around it. he wont tell me. there are two main passwords, a startup password, then an account password. i know the top "ubuntu, with linux" will get me pass the one start-up password. is theyre any way to get passed the account password without needing it. if not, how can i decode the Administration's password?
Thank you!! Worked just fine! I;m using Ubunto 11.10 and I just opened a new terminal and typed exactly what you did (ls to find user name) and then passwd "my user name" then hit enter. It asked what I wanted my new password to be and then it made me retype it. Then it WORKED!! Thank you, Thank you! Maybe this comment will be of use to someone else...

This is only working if you have not set a root password,
if you have a clean installation there is no root password set.
