Vu dans Plus Clair (canal plus), en compagnie du créateur de Heroes.
For those out there who don't speak french: TIM KRING created "Heroes", the landmark tv show on US television this year, each episode being followed by an average of 12 million people each episode. Frederic Azemar, screenwriter, and Cedric Salmon, director, are currently developing two tv shows they created for France 3 and M6, two major french tv networks. Obviously, the french tv industry has a lot to learn from the US. So saddle up, here is a master class from a crafty american showrunner to his two up-and-coming fellow writers.
LESSON NUMBER ONE: FEEDING THE MONSTER
T.K: The best use of my time is in the writing room. I do a lot of rewriting, and I spend a lot of time in the editing room, with the editor. Unfortunately, there's so much stuff to do,it would not be the best use of my time to go to the set, because the show needs to be written every week, as we say, we need to feed the monster every week, or the monster will die.
LESSON NUMBER TWO: CREATING THE STRUCTURE
T.K: The structure is not determined until late in the development stages. Sometimes in the editing room we'll take a scene that was meant to be in the fifth act to put it in the first act, and we'll take a scene from the third act to put it in the fifth act. Because there are multiple storylines, sometimes five in a script, many of them are interchangeable.
LESSON NUMBER THREE: FOLLOWING NO RULE
T.K: The show eats up story very quickly and if you know where you're going you may get to that place too fast. Everyday we watch the takes and we get ideas just by watching the takes. We may realize that two characters are really good with each other. So let's take them and go this way.
