Whether the King James Version of the Bible is the inspired Word of God or not is a controversy that has raged in the ministry for many years. Although the only difference is literally one of translation, it has even on occasion come to pass that opposing views have been so fervently embraced that the Ministry of the word of God itself has suffered. We can easily understand when unbelievers stir up controversy and discontent, but not when it comes from within, from those who have been inspired by the word of God and want to come to know him in the splendor of his holiness.

Regardless of one's position on the matter of the King James Bible, however, we would do well to remember that for a member of the body of Christ, charity and harmony should always prevail. So, in order to facilitate the study and to promote the better understanding of the Word, I would like to present you today with just some of the English translations of just one of the many verses of the Word of God: The Christian Bible. Todays scripture reading is Exodus 21:7. Each version, though imperfect in and of itself, can bring us closer to the intended meaning, closer to the truth, closer to the inspired Word of God.

King James Bible
And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.

New International Version (©1984)
"If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as menservants do.

New Living Translation (©2007)
"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are.

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
"If a man sells his daughter as a female slave, she is not to go free as the male slaves do.

GODS WORD Translation(©1995)
"Whenever a man sells his daughter into slavery, she will not go free the way male slaves do.

World English Bible
"If a man sells his daughter to be a female servant, she shall not go out as the male servants do.

Bible in Basic English
And if a man gives his daughter for a price to be a servant, she is not to go away free as the men-servants do.

And finally...

Young's Literal Translation
'And when a man selleth his daughter for a handmaid, she doth not go out according to the going out of the men-servants;

So whether the King James Version of the Bible is the inspired word of God or not, when deciding whether to sell our daughters to be servants, maidservants, slaves, female slaves or handmaids, we should be aware that the only difference is one of translation.

Thank you for your kind attention, and May God shower you with His presence and awareness of His love!

  • Both slavery and misogyny in one verse. God approves of slavery and lays down rules for it. And women are nothing but chattels in his estimation. I wonder what those "handmaids" were to be used for. Probably just cleaning up after their masters, right?

  • I am sure!

  • @BibleSoftwareFree I'm not offended by an arrogant and uniformed person who tells me I'm wrong. That happens all the time. Everyone a slave? Please! What part of history are you referring to? The Hebrews took slaves from other countries, as described in the OT. Within their own group they were not slaves at all. Their captives were.

  • @Largo64 No offense but your ignorance of ancient world is stunning. Maybe you don't realize but almost EVERYONE was a slave in the ancient world if they weren't a business owner. This included teachers, engineers, scribes, carpenters you name trade. We still do this today, the military is a perfect example. Someone invested in training you in their trade so you need to stick around. Most people spent their entire life working in one trade for one "master".

  • @BibleSoftwareFree No, it wasn't a mandate to sell a daughter. But it was a permission to, and gave the rules regarding it. Slavery is immoral. A god who approves of it and regulates it rather than abolishing it is immoral as well.

  • @Largo64 They say ignorance is bliss. And you most certainly do not understand that verse in the bible. Oddly enough that verse is designed to protect female servants from being forced into prostitution because their employer doesn't want them anymore after their contract ends. It was ok to toss the men out on the street but not ok to do that to the women.

  • LOL, Actually that verse is not a mandate to sell your daughter. It was a rule governing the practice of indentured service, which was the ONLY means that people were employed in the ancient world. Contrary to the apparent meaning the passage is actually protecting female servants. After the 6 year contract was over the men could be fired and tossed out on the street to fend for themselves. The verse mandates that women CANNOT be tossed out on street thus forcing them into prostitution.
