NASA tested the parachutes for the recovery system on its Orion crew exploration vehicle above the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona on July 31. The test proved unsuccessful when a test set-up parachute failed.
The failed parachute -- called a programmer chute -- deployed, but it did not inflate properly and failed to get the test article that simulated the Orion crew module into the correct orientation, altitude and speed for the test, causing the parachute system for the test vehicle to fail.
"This is the most complicated parachute test NASA has run since the '60's....
Splat. This pretty much summarized the entire constellation program. We can do better. SpaceX has proved that.

maybe the should try converting the SR-71 blackbird to a space module, it goes over mach 3 and that is what ya need to get into the earths atmosphere from space. problem is getting out takes 11 times the speed of the blackbird but im sure we got a few rockets somewhere thatll do the trick:)

Hmm. The tumble on the capsule certainly was telling. I wonder what the center of gravity on the craft was. The tumble seemed to create enough turbulence to prevent the Drouges and mains from inflating properly.
Any follow up tests?

umm, remember the first rocket launch to space?... they couldn't do it then, so they tried again, and again, and well,..now they can...

well, just because this test failed doesnt mean they didnt learn from it... Trial and error is a great way to discover solutions!

Why does it seem NASA is moving backwards? They got men to the moon 40 years ago, now they can't get a cigar tube safely out the backdoor of an airplane.
