The song was written by pianist, John Lewis (of Modern Jazz Quartet fame). I believe it was composed after Django's death; and so if the tune has a somber quality, that may be the reason. Although Gabor Szabo did not have near the influence that Renhardt had, he did have something that is said to be prized in jazz circles - his own voice on his instrument. While there are many 'Djangophiles' playing and recording these days; few have as recognizable and unique a sound as did Gabor.
