Here it is, folks, easily the hardest fight of the challenge!

Though Barubary actually isn't the final boss of the game (but a warm-up before him), he's actually much harder. Some difficult earlier bosses in this challenge were very well beatable thanks to terrible AI.

You can't really find any bad AI in the case of Barubary, however. He has a limited skillset that features Bolt X, which is an instant game over (watching this video reveals a very rare exception), a physical attack that hits all four party members instead of just one (similar to what Bow can do with one of his weapons) and two other physical moves which, contrary to what their names suggest, are non-elemental. Barubary also can counter physical attacks with his own (in which case, it will only harm the attacker not the entire party), but we're obviously not that stupid to pummel him with swords and staves. Seeing Bolt X is mostly the reason to reset in this battle, but nothing here is guaranteed, as even a physical attack dealing more random damage than you'd expect leads to a game over.

Sailor Nemesis has come up with a strategy for Barubary that I believe cannot be improved in any way. I'd say it's one of the most creative and precise strategies low level gamers have invented. I'll try to explain it in some details though.

Ryu in this battle is the centre of offence. Nothing in our party can match his G.Dragon summon, which deals precisely 999 damage to all enemies. With WiseBL, we can bring Ryu's AP back to maximum the same turn he casts the dragon so that he's able to cast another one next turn.

Most importantly, what you need to know about this boss is that his damage potential is frightening. We bring, along with Ryu, two warriors with most survivability (read: HP) and Katt. Spar and Rand have the most HP and have the best chances to survive the boss's attacks. Katt is very quick even at her low level and can go before the boss with the right equipment setup (even when she's been kicked out of her devil form). We need Katt to act before the boss to use Biscuits on the party (Def X + Cure X) and also for other stuff as well.

An essential item in this battle is the Moon Drop. It revives everyone who died and heals all HP. We have exactly 15 of those and they're the sole reason why we even stand a chance here.

Now, Barubary is very likely to kill someone, maybe even several people, with his physical attack. There's no guarantee the Moon Drop user (and Moon Drop MUST be used every turn, as all boss's attacks hurt the whole party) will stay alive and if they die... that may very well mean the end of the battle. However, due to this unpredictability some extreme scenarios may unfold and that makes the boss really fun.

In the first battle, Ryu must be equipped with heavy armour. Why? It slows him down and we want the dragon summon to trigger the end of the first battle AFTER Moon Drop is used so that we have everyone at full health and Katt alive in the beginning of the big battle ahead of us.

I make a joke before the beginning of the second battle (lol hilarious rite) and the next two minutes are some of the most epic moments I've recorded.

We don't get to touch the boss until everyone is standing strong again (you can see me having incredible luck several turns in a row). Now, Ryu is equipped with armour that doesn't slow him down again, because we will want his AP restored to allow him to cast a G.Dragon every turn, no less. Rand is now faster than Spar, so the former uses a Moon Drop and the latter uses a WiseBL on Ryu. It's logical to have the Moon Drop uses by the faster person so that, in case the slower one gets killed, he can still act the same turn. Unfortunately, there's no adequate way of equipping Ryu to have a speed to act between Rand and Spar without ruining somebody's defence but this is better than nothing.

When Katt doesn't need to use a Biscuit (i.e. nobody got killed the previous turn, except Katt who always dies when she doesn't dodge the attack), she tries to reduce the boss's attack with Pan Pizza. If Ryu has 0 AP when you choose commands, you can dedicate Spar to cast Pwr. Down to try achieving the same effect.

A strange thing here is that though I don't succeed to reduce the boss's power, one of his final attacks is strangely weak. I've watched the whole recording several times and couldn't get it. Could it be that his strength goes down when you bring him to his death? I can't think of a reasonable explanation.

I sped up the second part mostly because YouTube limits videos to 11 minutes but also to make it more epic. The only edit I made was the "joke" thing before the second battle, which was actually from another battle. By that I mean that the second battle did follow the first one without any save stating and what not.

  • o pal. where did you get so many moondrops?. great achievment

Barubary is a hell to kill.

  • You can get as many as you like from stepping on the coloured squares in Thieves' Tomb.

  • Okay..awesome! I still haven't gotten this far in BoFII.

So what's with the food products changing statuses?

  • Some stuff that can be cooked imitate the effect of spells, e.g. Pan Pizza does the same thing as the Pwr. Down spell. Some are even more advanced; for example, Moon Drop revives and heals everyone, restoring HP to max.

  • I actually beat him alone. But I did a lot of training and was at high level. But it was back then.....

  • This is obviously why Breath of Fire II is a good game. It completely makes up for the horrible translation. The first game, however, not so much...

  • Katt FTW :)

  • does anyone use that one snake lady caster?

  • Barubary is sexy.

  • 4:20 if dat isnt a 16-bit miracle then i dont know what is.....

  • Good job I must say. I also have to state that I love the bosses art designs in this game! They were truly amazing for their time.

  • 3:35

Heh, you should have shown the hit connect.:P

  • does by far the most physical damage.
