I make the hole with an awl and I suppose that's a way of doing it in the wild, you could also use the bowdrill method with a thin spindle.
Also, after some trial and error I've come to the conclusion that you want the stick to be as thick as possible and have as little as possible of it going into the actual hole as you can manage while it still staying in place with the help of the knot to get the right sensitivity.
Smearing the shaved parts with some dirt helps it look more natural as well.
