Never was the shade of any plant sweeter, dearer, more agreeable! George Frideric Handel, from Serse. Andreas Scholl, countertenor, originally sung by alto-castrato Caffarelli (Gaetano Majorano). (For further information about high-male voices, check http://www.malesopranos.com )

  • Very good rendition by Herr Scholl, but I prefer to Herr Kowalski's.

  • @Cissy97 Andreas Scholl’s rendition is the most pure-voiced (“voci bianché”); therefore, I like his authentic Baroque voice; whereas Kowalski’s performance has a more dramatic, perhaps emotional, sound.

  • Andreas Scholl has the perfect voice for this! I love the way HE sings it.

  • @danaivnv The general interest in Barqoue vocal music has been renewed only relatively recently. Consequently, many people do not understand and have not learned what a Baroque voice / castrato voice should sound like. The purity of of Scholl's voice is, as you say, exceptionally excellent for this kind of music.

  • Log Live Persia e Handel!

  • And does anyone else feel that his voice sounds strained? The only countertenor I have heard that doesn't seem to have a strained voice and a fast vibrato is Bejun Mehta.

  • Superb.TY s for posting.

  • Is this Die Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin accompanying Andreas Scholl?

  • Pure gold.

Tender and beautiful fronds of my beloved plane tree, let Fate smile upon you. May thunder, lightning, and storms never bother your dear peace, nor may you by blowing winds be profaned. A shade there never was, of any plant, dearer and more lovely, or more sweet.
  • Scholl's version is beautiful. Listen to Kathleen Ferrier's rendition for feeling. She's out of fashion these days. And, OK, not the most technically gifted artist. But just listen and weep.
