At 7:30am on March 22 2009, a Canadian National freight train derailed near Colborne Ontario. The train spilled 4 cars off the track and onto adjacent Canadian Pacific railway property. The accident occured near Blyth Park Rd in Cramahe Township. This derailment caused a ripple effect to VIA passenger trains and CN freight trains which operate on CN's Montreal-Toronto mainline. VIA trains were cancelled and CN freights sat at yards or out on the main track, waiting to get through the derailment site.

At 1:30pm, one track was opened up for trains. This started a tidal wave of trains. First for westbounds, then eastbounds. In waves of 5 or six.

CN local freight 518 was also affected by the derailment. Usually this train operates from Belleville to Port Hope and back on the Kingston Subdivision. Since it couldn't operate past the derailment site, CN 518 took the places of CN 519 (a Belleville to Kingston and return local) and CN 590 (A Belleville to Brockville and return local). All along the way, CN 518, with two GP38-2's, 4700 - a fresh repaint into the new CN colors, and 4701 - an engine with the faded zebra stripes of the 1970's, switched industries with spurs off the Kingston Sub.

Seen here in this video, CN 518, now operating westward after switching industries in Kingston, snakes through some S-curves, underneath the Taylor-Kidd Blvd bridge and crosses County Road 6, heading to Millhaven. It's two GP38-2's pulling hard and making 50mph.

  • Ya, he was moving along at a good speed there! I caught 518 today as it made it's way from Invista to the CN mainline via the Cataraqui sub!

Check it out at my Channel!

  • I like the angle of the train into the curve, nice vid.
