  • I've started playing D&D two years ago. I've played 4E and Pathfinder, and I think both of them have their positive points. First off; I hate how Pathfinder handles magic. I understand having to prepare spells, but why would a wizard need to rememorize all of his spells everyday? I wish there was alternative MP based (like psion) system for spontaneous casters. As for 4E, its a hell lot of fun for short games, but it gets boring for long campaigns because it is way too simple.

  • @4look4rd There is a PF Psionics book. It is called Psionics Unleashed. I did a review.

  • @MichaelMartinez984 4e is all meta game? No roleplay? Maybe in the groups you've been in, but my 4e group is full of RP and deep characters, interesting plots and the like? Same with my Pathfinder group. The system makes no difference, it's the players.

Besides. If healing surges, shifting, second wind, encounter powers, and paragon paths are metagamey then so are 5 foot step, 5 feet/10 feet diagonal movements, flat-foot and touch, and confirm crit rolls. Point is, _all_ rules are meta-game.

  • I completely agree. I stopped playing DnD around 2E and came back after 4E. I started DMing 4E and after a bit I realized that it didn't remind me of DnD from back in the day at all. I continued to DM 4e but started looking at Pathfinder and I am in love with it. It just seems to have more RPG utility built into the rules and mechanics. I am about to ask my group to swith over - I might use your video to help convince them.

  • @TheFunnyscool yeah except it's like if the TV went from a plasma-screen to an old black and white antenna TV

  • cheer up its like electronics you buy all thease video game 5 years later a new console and fuck... or tv its up to the 3d next will be like a hologrom tv sooo either way things are gonna update thats just life its evolution my freind been going on for a while now

  • @runebeo I saw that, and that didn't make sense to me either. What's the point? Minions to me (going back to 1st and second edition) are monsters of a certain type with a set amount of hit dice. Back in the day, if you didn't like something about the first editions, you could change them in your game. We did this 20 years ago and had fun.

  • Pathfinder in my opinion is way too heavy and complicated. I started reading it and thought, wtf? I guess I'm more of a kinetic learner instead of a book learner. With that said, Labyrinth Lord Advanced appeals to me.

  • 4th Edition sucked with 1 hit point minions, ya a powerful ogre is going to die from any action that deals damage. Without 4th Edition, Pathfinder wouldn't took off. I hope 5th edition brings back away more 3.5 approach and a new OLG or Wizards will see my money go to their abandoned system with Paizo!

  • @inlife9 4th edition is gay, and your comment makes me want to slap the taste out of your mouth.

  • Even though my first RPG video was about 4e, I've seen the error of my ways. I have since went to 2e, 3.0, and Pathfinder. 4e was too simplified and white washed. It took the magic out of D&D, it made the game appeal to MMO players. I'm not saying 4e can't be enjoyed but Its shouldn't be 4e, It should be something different, a whole other game. 3e/Pathfinder I found is my RPG

  • I started with 2nd ed. AD&D back in 1998-ish. Looked on 3rd as a bastardization of TSR by Wizards of the Coast, though I started to play it as the "fancy" Magic the Gathering artwork helped to attract new players. Now every time I invest in some of the books it seems like a year or two latter they stop production, like cutting off a cancer and force a "New" edition on loyal players. AD&D will always be my favorite because of its complexities, 3rd is tolerable but 4th is a WoW clone with books.

  • I've played 3.5 for years now and see how bad you need magic in upper levels. Pathfinder really leveled the playing field, and it makes me happy that even a FIGHTER is a viable choice in the upper end of the game. Paizo can shut up and take my money, because the next generation of D&D is in their hands now. :)

  • @inlife9 I find much true in what you say. My only difference of opinion is I am not as certain about 3.5 being the same way, as you are, as I remember the push for DnD mini's at the same time. As I write this, perhaps it was planned just that way.

My favorite description was the 4th Edition commercial of DnD through the years and the confusion on the the grapple rules. the player in the end just says "screw it, I attack with my sword."

So, in the end Chainmail wins over new players best? lol
