Clare Rojas Mini-Documentary for the Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture Touring Exhibition - 2006
Clare E. Rojas is a San Francisco-based artist of multiple talents who paints, draws, makes animated films, as well as writes and performs music. She paints highly detailed works on panel evoking beautifully idiosyncratic fantasy worlds straight from the artists subconscious. Rojas employs few art historical stops along the way, save for a collision with teenage notebook art and surrealism. At first glance, Rojas paintings seem saccharine, but closer examination reveals the kind of darkness found in fairytales. Little girls and androgynous characters share space with snakes, sloths, birds, and grimacing monsters. The color and texture of her paintings resemble silkscreen prints, the result of Rojas training in and enthusiasm for printmaking, which she deftly explored during her tenure at Space 1026, the Philadelphia cooperative gallery renowned for its expert screen printers. Rojas has exhibited her works nationally, including exhibits at New Image Art, Los Angeles, Deitch Projects, New York, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. As the musician Peggy Honeywell, Rojas has released two records, Honey for Dinner and Faint Humms.
