Bill Lindley (Ahimsananda) discusses the need for experience in Spirituality, and the need for a Teacher that will nourish and love you through the "struggle" and share the Joys of discovery in a practical way that does not require you to accept platitudes and easy answers.
I see what you're getting at, but "you are already That" was for me one of the most useful pointers I've ever heard. I think it only becomes an obstacle if a religion is made out of it, if it's turned into another belief. As long as it's seen that the goal of "you are already That" is the dissolution of the seeker and not to become another belief in your mental archive of beliefs, it can be extremely beneficial. Yet another one of those "finger pointing to the moon" things, I guess.
