Vagrant Story Boss: Duane

Ah... Finally! I get out of the smelly underground areas and actually see sunlight. But I cant go two screens without running into yet another boss.

Sarjik (sword and shield lackey) doesnt like edged weapons aimed at his head. Bejart (two-handed axe lackey) doesnt like piercing weapons aimed at his groin. And Duane (the damn explosion priest) hates edged weapons hitting his crotch. I could care less if hitting below the belt is dishonorable. XD

Using the right weapon types should be enough, but if you need extra oomph, you can hit the lackeys with Degenerate (Duane is immune to it) and buff your equipment with Prostasia.

For gems, either Braveheart for accuracy or Haeralis for power will work fine. Just make your weapons have at least one of them attached.

Now this is important... DO NOT USE LIGHT AFFINITY WEAPONS! These guys will completely wall you if you do. Remember, theyre idiots from the church, so having high Light resistance is expected. So, dont use the Soulkiss dagger and check your weapons beforehand (especially if you had been using the weapon to fight Undead enemies).

The lackeys will fall relatively quickly, Duane and his pesky Explosion spell is the main threat. Do you remember that crap you started the game with - like Bandages and Sandals? Go drag them out of your storage box. Yes, leather equipment may have shoddy weapon defense, but it has excellent magic resistance. You will want the Pelta Shield, Bandages x2, Bear Mask, Cuirass, Sandals, and the Rood Necklace equipped for maximum magic resistance. There, now Explosion damage should be reduced significantly. Also, Explosion may look like a fire spell, but its actually a physical-damage spell, so try to use the Impact Guard (not Fireproof) defense ability to cut damage. Duane also likes to cast Poison Mist. Poison is not really a threatening status effect, but curing it immediately may prompt Duane to cast Poison Mist again instead of another Explosion spell.

Dont bother with chains attacks when fighting Duane! He is one of those annoying chain-breaker enemies who will frequently block your chain attacks. Some chain attacks will get through, but it appears he blocks around 75% of them, and all those missed attacks will just unnecessarily raise your RISK.

Duane drops the Wizard Robe when defeated... which is one of the best equipment in the game! Seriously, it has 25 MAGIC DEFENSE!!!! TWENTY FIVE!!! You will definitely want this equipped when fighting the other magic bosses.

Hee. Guildenstern. I love their little stare off after the battle. I know what hes thinking, "Eh... I should probably go over there and stop Ashley, but I rather not risk getting a Sodomy Stick shoved up my ass. I am sure one of the games gazillion other bosses will kill him." XD

Renaming weapons is half of the fun!

You can also use the renaming feature to confuse people who never played the game before. I mean, someone not familiar with the game might actually think there is a weapon called Sodomy Stick! XD

@HolyBoredom I did, and it worked, though I didn't seem to be as effective as you were in this video. Also, every subsequent boss seems to get harder and harder. I try every weapon type I have in my inventory, and the best I can get out of some is about 5-30 damage. I thought I'd like this game for its atmosphere, since I loved FFT, FF XII, Tactics Ogre, etc, and I do love this one's atmosphere, but the difficulty, and archaic timing on the chain system is a bit of a turnoff....

The guide is useless when it comes to equipment. I was doing well in the catacombs, kicking ass with a greatsword for undead, but as soon as I start fighting these guys, I'm pulling off near 5 damage a piece with every weapon I have! Help?
