we arrived to a bald eagle chasing a Canada goose over the Fraser River in Richmond. they were late in the chase, as the goose was getting lower to the water, the eagle 2 metres back. the goose went to the middle of the river (intentionally?) and the eagle landed on it's back and stayed there with the intention of drowning it...
The video picks up with an exhausted eagle desperately paddling to shore, with the goose firmly in it's talons and fully underwater...

  • I have never seen anything like this before!

  • @Phoenixfalconer This is actually pretty common. It's just not witnessed by many, unless you spend a lot of time around eagles. Recently, someone sent me photos of an eagle going after a Trumpeter Swan in mid-air! Unsuccessful, but wow, what a bold (or desperate) move! BTW, eagles and ospreys have been known to drown when killing and retrieving their prey in water!

  • That is incredible!

  • @JBirdMon09 That could be it. I only see eagles when I go to North New York. We have a pair about 5 miles from my house but it's on government property, so the public can't even get close enough to get a spotting scope on the nest.

  • Thats the food chain at its finest right there !
