One hundred and fifty-first class, dismissed!"
With those words, 85 recruits yesterday joined the ranks of the New Jersey State Police, increasing the division's manpower for the first time since 2009.
State Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa, on the job only three weeks, congratulated the class and reminded the newly minted state troopers, who endured 24 weeks of rigorous training, to be respectful of their oath and responsibilities.
"You are the protectors of our most vulnerable citizens," Chiesa told the class at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River.
In a three-hour ceremony witnessed by relatives and friends of recruits, as well as by officers from New Jersey and neighboring states, the new troopers pledged themselves to their new family: the New Jersey State Police.
"From here on in, this is your organization and your profession," State Police Superintendent Rick Fuentes told the crew. "Treat this organization as if it were your own family because you are now a member of ours."
Trooper Allison Pavlosky, 29, of Roxbury earned the marksmanship award, scoring 179 out of 180, and her classmates also selected her for the outstanding recruit award.
Pavlosky, formerly a Chester Township police officer, said after the ceremony she wanted to join the State Police after an internship with the agency.
At 34, Trooper Michael Ma of Hackensack was the oldest in the class, getting in under the cut-off age by just a year. Ma, a former manager for a milk company and father of three whose family came to the United States from Hong Kong when he was 12, said he thought his desire for law and order could be best addressed by joining the State Police
"When is a better time to change my career?" said Ma, the married father of three. Trooper Dwayne Golding, 29, of Hackensack said the discipline he learned from his grandparents in Jamaica inspired his career choice.
"I always wanted to join the military," the Jamaica native said. "This was the next thing."
