(c)2003 Lee Westerso All Rights Reserved

Written by my grandfather in 1941. He recorded it on an old Motorola radio with a 78 rpm record cutter built in on the top. A big Jimmy Rodgers fan, he played guitar and fiddle, and wrote from the heart. I was 9 years old when he died in 1968. His name was Bernard Westerso.

You promised that you would be true
Your promise was all in vain
But my heart keeps calling for you, Dear
Like the flowers call for the rain

You may be sorry someday, Dear
That you have broken my heart
That you have kept me away, Dear
And fooled me from the start
Now this is my last appeal, Dear
I've only a word to say
Why did you give me your love, Dear
When it lasted only a day?

  • Gotta love those old archtops. I have an old kalamazoo from the 40's but it needs a doctor.

Good thing you cleaned yours up. looks and sounds good.Grandpa's song is another sad lament

    Aloha from Hawaii,

    Thomas

  • Gary, that means so much coming from a man (and familiy) of your talent and stature. I learned that song and played it for my Dad (he passed in April '03)years ago and he cried. He had a pretty cold heart most of the time (as did HIS father, the man who wrote this song). It still brings forth tears at family reunions and stuff. (of course we all throw in some Dobro and mandolin licks out of spite and/or love, simply for good music and good fun. Thank you again, Gary

Love from my wife CJ, too!

  • very cool guitar what a great tribute. wow he has been gone 40 years and his music is still reaching out. he may be gone but he is not forgotten. very touching my friend, Gary
