I think the most profound scene in movie history. The bone, (weapon of pre-historic man) thrown skyward, gives way to a similar shaped 'nuclear weapons platform', (weapon of modern man) in Earth orbit. In a fraction of a second, the viewer has jumped millions of years in the evolution of mankind.

I'm not sure why people have marked you down for your comment, other than they didn't understand what you meant. For people that don't know, 'the dog's bollocks' or 'the mut's nuts' is British slang for saying something is good, great or excellent. Simse01 was just saying that 2001: A Space Odyssey looks great and that the film 'Cocoon' doesn't compare to it. I agree with him/her completely.
best cut scene ever. it signifies the importance of pre-historic man's brain, for the first time ever, to evolve and think of the bone as a tool. With the discovery of tools, empires and civilizations were created. the space station is the ultimate symbol of the evolution process, and now, we use the space station (bone) as an instrument to further evolve ourselves. The Star child at the end of the movie represents this next stage of evolution process for mankind.
Yes, the discovery of using the bone as a weapon allowed pre-historic man to perpetuate, just as he was on the brink of extinction, (covered better in the book). The monolith was the communicator for the unseen tutors.
I try my best to describe the match cut as I remember it from 1968: the very moment the bone had reached the position and angle the space ship still has now, it cut to the space ship. This transition was smooth and jarring at the same time! Now an angle of more than 45 degrees between the bone and the ship is missing, that is there is a jump now!
