The problem was Leeds trams was loosing money because they wernt allowed to make a profit being council controlled, So the fares was rediculasly low and you could ride out to the suburbs about 4 1/2 miles for 6d that was about 2p and each tram or bus had a driver and conductor so no money was spent to upgrade the system, About 70% of leeds trams was on private resavation so did not come into contact with road traffic (Ideal system) pity it wasnt forthought years ago

Stupid to get rid of the trams but if it was loosing money fare enough but most of the tracks are still buried beneith our feet eg in meanwood

Hunslet

Kirstall road

And more it's all still there if they ever needed money Leeds could dig out the streets and sell on the metal of the track for money

sad yes but not all laber concils are the same and someconcils are tyd up with money and have meany respoinsbiltys so sometime s sad disitions have to be made as ther is no chise its a mater off mony this is way tram ways like in blackpoool are privet or half prvet as it is the privet secter that can provide

The shortsighted Labour council at the time decided to close a very good transport system which could have been the most modern in Europe.

Much of it was on reserved track.

I dont know why the Government wont help fund the Council in Leeds to build a rapid transit system.....or a monorail...i think Leeds is one of the largest cities without a rapid transit system in place.

This needs to change to help establish Leeds as a Great City......with a top notch transport system...come on LCC Sort it out...
