The "Sturm und Drang" fantasias by CPE Bach are famous for their explosive and violent musical rhetoric. It is as if Carl Philipp took the rhetorically highly charged speaking style of his father as input and left us with a violent, at times almost atonal parlando that breaks all boundaries as output. In its turn, CPE Bach's rebellious rhetorical keyboard style metamorphized into the more civilized Viennese keyboard style of Haydn, only to be given the rebellious stamp of the CPE Bach fan Beethoven.
The instrument heard here is a 2009 replica of a fortepiano from 1790. Live, unedited recording of a recital in 2009.
Awsome performance! And fine instrument too.
