Franz Joseph Haydn (31 March 1732 -- 31 May 1809), known as Joseph Haydn, was an Austrian composer, one of the most prolific and prominent composers of the Classical period. He is often called the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet" because of his important contributions to these forms. He was also instrumental in the development of the piano trio and in the evolution of sonata form.
Symphony No. 13 in D major (1763)
written for the orchestra of Haydn's patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, in Eisenstadt.
Bela Drahos, flute and the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra conducted by Adam Fischer
New York, Manhattan
The work can be precisely dated thanks to a dated score in Haydn's own hand in the National Library of Budapest. Two other Haydn symphonies are known to have been written in the same year: the Symphony No. 12 and the Symphony No. 40.
typical symphony at this time was written for a pairs of oboes and horns and string instruments, but the Eisenstadt orchestra had recently taken on two new horn players, and Haydn wrote this symphony for an expanded ensemble of one flute, two oboes, four horns, timpani and strings (violins divided into firsts and seconds), violas, cellos and double basses), with bassoon doubling the bass-line. The timpani part in the autograph score is not in Haydn's hand, but it is quite possibly authentic: he may have written it on a separate sheet, with somebody else adding it to the score at a later date.
The city feels a tad familiar, heh, for playing Grand Theft Auto... I encourage you to continue uploading music accompanied with personal videos. We do appreciate art and paintings (it helps to stay up to date on painters) and even more scores to look at the notation. But this does make it very special!
