This wasn't the most crucial race of the 1999 season. A few weeks earlier in Houston, Paul Tracy won a race by nursing a set of tires for an unbelievable 55 laps. He took only fuel on his second stop to gain track position.

Tracy's win and a lack of team orders meant Franchitti finished third in Houston. If Franchitti had finished higher, he would have been the outright champion in 1999 on points. Instead, there was a tie with Montoya (212 each), and JPM got the title on wins (4 to 3).
