Renown bassist Bob Cranshaw remembers Hank Jones.

Henry "Hank" Jones (July 31, 1918 May 16, 2010) was an American jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer. Critics and musicians described Jones as eloquent, lyrical, and impeccable.

In 1989, The National Endowment for the Arts honored Hank Jones with its highest honor in jazz, the NEA Jazz Masters Award. He was also honored in 2003 with the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) Jazz Living Legend Award. In 2008, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. On April 13, 2009, the University of Hartford presented Hank Jones with a Doctorate Degree for his musical accomplishments.

Hank Jones recorded over sixty albums under his own name, and countless others as a sideman

  • Ha! Never knew Hank Jones was referred to as "Bad Henry." I have so many recording where Hank was the pianist. The master indeed. Seems like he was everywhere in the 1950's and 1960's. Cranshaw also mentions Tommy Flanagan, another master.

I first heard Bob Cranshaw with the MJT+3 in 1961 or so. A great bassist!

  • Hank Jones, or "Bad Henry" will be missed. But luckily we have his recordings, and our memories, to sustain us.

    Thanks for posting this video.

  • Hank Jones will always be my hero !

I can never forget that day, after the gig,at the backstage talking to him, getting into an excellent conversation all about his family and the other jazz greats, taking lots of his autographs .. That point was I think, one of the most defining moments in my life ...

Thank you so much that, what you had made as music and as you had helped it improve and made so special ! I will always be a huge fan of your great brothers' and yours !!!

  • Very nice piece of jazz history, Bret - thanks!

  • May you rest peacefully Hank. So much wonderful music.

    A truly great loss.

  • R.I.P. Hank, what a marvellous man he was.

  • Rest peacefully Hank. Thank you for all the music that we have for future generations.
