PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Everyone likes to get something for free. So, the city is hoping some people with green thumbs will appreciate the latest round of tree giveaways.
"Interest in the environment and going green has increased over the past few years, and people are recognizing that something as simple as a tree can improve their environment, the city and their own properties," said Jeff Bergman, the director of TreeVitalize.
One-thousand trees drew a line well before they started passing out the small dogwood seedlings.
Paid for through a partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, the program is part of an overall push to get Pittsburgh a little more green.
"We have planted 250 trees in the business district here, and we're trying to work on our shade canopy and it helps with business," said Lisa Ceoffe, the city urban forester.
It's a small gift with no guarantee of success, but city residents don't mind it.
"Just take a look around. It's beautiful," said Rosie Fabina, of the North Side. "I think a lot of people appreciate this."
If 3,000 trees aren't enough, the city says it's still not done. Officials are planning on handing out more trees at other events in advance of World Environment Day.
