This is Michelle Kemp rehearsing Et Misericordia from the Magnificat by John Rutter on July 7, 2008. This is me singing 9 weeks post thyroid surgery. The throat is still tight and I am having to really open the rib cage to be able to open the throat so i can sing with a full sound. That is why you see me with my hands on my back. Singing through the second passaggio was very difficult because it felt really tight in comparrision to how it felt before my surgery. However, all is well now. It took me about 3 1/2 months to full recover vocally from the surgery. Because the throat is tight from the swelling and healing process, the higher notes are slightly tighter than normal. Also, due to the surgery, the voice got very tired after about 25 minutes of singing. However, this was best I could do at the time and I made it through the performance that evening. I am most grateful that I can sing.

Thanks. This song was most difficult for me at the time because my throat felt like someone performed extreme plastic surgery on me. It was so tight and I had to find new ways to make it open. I posted it to encourage other singers who may be dealing with the same issues. I wanted them to know there is hope at the end of the tunnel. It was a frustrating time because I was beginning to wonder if I would ever sing with the same amount of freedom that I had before surgery.
