Daisy Villalejo from the Cojunto folklorico nacional de Cuba was in Toronto March 2009 to give an amazing workshop in Afro Cuban dance and Rumba . Workshops took place at Steps Dance studio and Ballet Creole with great support from Afrolatino dance company and produced by Cubaintoronto.com . She was invited to Canada by Marie Jose Miron in Montreal and collaborated with teachers Julio Hong and Orlando Alfonso .
Here is a mini birography
Ms. Daisy Villalejo is well known in afrocuban art circles for her performances as a solo dancer as well as for her vast experience in teaching and choreography. She is a graduate of the Superior Arts Institute of the University of Havana with a specialist degree in afrocuban folkloric dancing.
Daisy started her productive career in 1974 as a ballerina in the Patakin Ballet , where she performed in many afrocuban dancing events as a soloist, and went on to participate in many world tours for numerous national and international shows.
In 1980 she joined the well-known Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba, where she continued her productive career as a solo dancer while initiating work as a choreographer and teacher, which she carries on to this day. She has received many medals of honour and various prizes in recognition of both these facets of her work.
Concurrent with her activities at the Conjunto - memory and tradition of afrocuban folkloric ballet - Daisy has been participating in and managing several training programs in many European and American countries, thereby spreading the knowledge of afrocuban dance and traditions. Many dancers, both professional and amateur, have had the opportunity to appreciate her teaching talents. Thanks to Daisy Villalejo, they were then able to incorporate afrocuban motions into their dances, or, to put it more simply, to become passionate about these ritual Arts which have become an important part of Cubas dancing legacy.
