Local residents protest a proposal that would only set new building height restrictions/rezoning of the East Village, while excluding predominantly Chinese and Spanish speaking neighborhoods. The proposal protects the more affluent community of the East Village while ignoring those of lesser income. As a result, the neglected neighborhoods remain susceptible to gentrification.

  • Josh, please define progress? Is progress to remove residents who have lived in this neighborhood for years? Is progress to displace people of color and those of lower income? The world does not belong to the wealthy and it is the responsibility of government to ensure that all people are protected and represented. We're not talking about communism, but democracy for all people regardless of economic or social standing. Economic discrimination is as bad as any other ism.

  • One of these days gentrification will start going in reverse. It is going to get to the point where they will realize they don't have enough poor people in the city to do certain jobs and will realize they need to keep a certain number of low rent areas. The economy is bad right now with so many unemployed and ridiculously expensive costs, more people will start resorting to crimes to get what they want making more bad neighborhoods pop up again.

  • These people are communists and just don't get it. Redevelopment of the lower east side is good for everyone. This neighborhood has been constantly changing for more than a hundred years. They want to freeze progress for their own idealistic fantasies. Sad.

  • Overdevelopment is destroying our communities in the five boroughs. Its about time that our elected representatives step up to the plate and support their constituents.

  • COALITION TO PROTECT THE LOWER EAST SIDE!

Come on people! This is our chance to begin to turn the tide against the developers who are wrecking our city!
