I had a viewer comment on my tennis serve on the Nadal Serve Video I have posted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpU8EZmqOT4).

The viewer commented on the fact that I am not "following through" on my tennis serve.

If you study Pete Sampras, who had one of the greatest serves of all time, you will see him arm bend right after contact.

Bending your arm right after contact on the tennis serve will allow you to relax and pronate your hand and arm correctly.

We have all heard the word "PRONATION" from a coach when they are explaining the tennis serve.

The key is to be like Pete Sampras and actually get that arm to bend after contact during the tennis serve.

The next comment this viewer made stated I was not jumping out into the court enough on the tennis serve.

I am here to set the record straight on this tennis serve myth.

If you study the videos of servers like Federer, Sampras and Roddick, most of the time they will land on the baseline or just in front of the baseline after their tennis serve.

Traditional coaching might tell you jump out into the court as far as you can after the tennis serve.

Well this leaves you, what some might call, "no man's land". This is not a good position to be in after your tennis serve.

Take a hint from players like Roddick, who have been known to hit serves upwards to 158mph, and try not to leap out into the court after your tennis serve.

The very last comment this viewer posted was that my toss was too far over my head on the tennis serve.

If you compare my tennis serve to the tennis serve of Andy Roddick, you will see the ball position is right over our heads.

Tossing the ball over your head on the tennis serve will allow you to actually hit on top of the tennis ball instead of behind it.

Hitting the top part of the ball will allow you to get more topsin on the first serve which will drasctically improve the consistency of it.

Go ahead and try these tips out on the tennis serve.

Leave a COMMENT below and we'll discuss anything you would like on the tennis serve!

  • Pete's serve was all wrist with the proper body foundation, set up, to allow all the energy transfer to his wrist. The shoulder and chest are used to but more for strength than speed

  • Pronation is a knee bend when you tell someone to jump as high as they can. If they can jump over 2 feet that means they bent their knees. There is no need to tell them to try and bend their knee's it automatic. If you can hit over 100mph or even 70mph then pronation is there. You can't teach pronation really, its wrist muscle development. I can hit 115mph just using my wrist (standing straight facing the net, with the racquet up high at contact position)

  • Retired figure skating coach here. I think that Pete and Roger have the best serves both disguise-wise and technical artistry! I think a lot of the top players can serve well, Hewitt, Safin, etc. But when I want to copy someone I take out Roger or Pete's to view as I think they are the most effortless & law of parsimony type of serves.

  • Serves are individual. There is no "correct" method.

  • I think you are right. Serving the way you said generate more power and control at least for me.

  • Federer has a pretty DECENT serve????... You are kidding right?.. One of the best serves in the Tour if not of all time falling behind just a few big names. You might have been a former atp player but show some respect to RF. Lol, pretty decent serve....hah

  • 1:55 HIGHT 5 for the ironie

  • Rather than imitation of others, the result is what counts. Different folks have different serve motion, since everyone's body's different. Give it try & take the goods, then skip what didn't work. Develop your own style!

  • Jeff is a former ATP tour player so plz guys, have some respect and he knows what's he talking about!
