17-year-old Sasha is the smoldering center of a gang of Pontian Greek kids who live precariously on the margins of Athens, hustling by night in Omonia Square. Having come with their families from Kazakhstan as refugees, they are shunned in their new homeland, even though they are ethnic Greeks. With drugs fueling their increasingly volatile existence, their lives and the ties that bind them eventually shatter as they collide with the city's harsh underside. Director Constantine Giannaris won the Best Director Award at the 39th International Thessaloniki Film Festival (1998) and his film was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards in 1999.

". . .and his film was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards in 1999."
From the Edge of the City was Greece's official entry into the Oscars, but it wasn't nominated. The nominees were:
-FRANCE (East/West)
-NEPAL (Caravan - "Himalaya" in other countries)
-ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER (Spain)
-SWEDEN (Under the Sun)
-THE UK (Solomon and Gaenor)

I saw this back in 2000, it was a great movie. It seemed to vanish afterward.
I didn't get the thing about them being ethnic Greeks. I assumed they were just another group of Russian refugees.
