I think people who complain about Sophie are missing the point a bit. The show's not a romantic comedy. It sets up Mark as the geeky guy, and we start off thinking that if Sophie would just go out with him everything would be fine. But actually Mark's not sweet-geeky, he's a controlling weirdo (see later seasons for examples of this). Of course they're miserable, that's the whole point of the show. It's an anti-romance, if you like.

Sophie has never been a good match for Mark, and I'm so sad he wasted so much time on her. I know he's not amazing, and sometimes an ass, but she's worse. She treats him absolutely miserably.
