Here is a short clip I've made as a project for a course I've taken earlier this year. My first time ever trying to film something meaningful and edit it so it's pretty amateur. Special thanks for the background music, you know who you are.

Synopsis:

This short movie is an experimental work. The movie is based on the final words of the legendary poet, comedian, artist, revolutionary activist Bill Hicks (1961-1994) and it can be considered as a tribute to him. I've first encountered a short clip of Bill Hicks 3 years ago, that was cropped out from his Revelations act in London. It caught my attention and for the following few months I've found myself trying to get my hands on every single act I could find about this man. I really like his point of view towards, religion, politics, war, music, modern world and people. I strongly believe that Bill Hicks was one of those people who tried to make a difference. The clip is based on life and the understanding of the society towards it. I wanted to use this opportunity to create a tribute to one of my idols, Bill Hicks. The idea behind the movie is to be able to present the words of Bill Hicks to motions. Ive duck-taped the camera on to my car and toured the city, representing the ride that Bill is talking about in his speech. I've stopped where I wanted to stop and rolled the camera. The message is there for everyone whos willing to comprehend it. I deeply hope that after watching the movie, the viewers would feel at least a tiny bit of impact on their lives hearing what Bill had to say. There is a meaning in every single scene synchronized with the lyrics on the background. Its Just a Ride starts in a parking lot in Maslak. The first scene represents the beginning of the ride called life. You start by getting in line to begin your round and up journey. They open up the gate for you and the first thing you see is an arrow which shows you where to go. You follow that arrow that was put there by higher authorities and begin your journey. The ride goes round and round. After that scene you see 2 guns on a box. Camera pulls back and you see a line of balloons as the targets. This represents how fragile and temporary the human life is. Whenever they want to end it, they just shoot you and you blow up as fast as a balloon. Camera moves left and you see two young boys that try to make a living out of shoe shining. The ride continues. The continuity of life, represented by the car ride, is one the major aspects of this movie. Next scene is shot behind a fence. It represents the two sides of life which you can look from. In this scene you see a crippled guy walking in the background and a taxi moves in just as bill says its just a ride. The cab there represents how this ride is mutual to all of the society. Life is not a ride in your own personal car, in fact, the ride is in a cab, a cab which is used by everyone, including you. A beautiful teenage girl passes by from the closer side of the fence and the scene fades out. The ride continues. You see a luxury car passing by in the foreground and you see sky breaking buildings in the background. Synchronized with Bills words the next scenes include people from different sides of the city. A man sitting down on the floor with a big rack of car parts in front of him, representing the fragility of the ride and the oblivion of the poor. An unemployed man drinking alcohol gazing at the sea is followed by this scene. Then, you see all these people on the bridge rushing left and right, absorbed by their worries and at the background you see a mosque. Next scene starts by a shot through a whole of the big gate of the mosque. This represents the effects of religion on peoples lives. You feel like you are in on everything but as the camera pulls back you see that you are actually behind the gate unaware of whats going on inside. As Bill says Is there a point in all this? you see the two minarets of the mosque at an angle that creates the feeling of pettiness towards religion. Next scene, the two minarets are replaced by two identical sky breakers and one more on the side. As the light goes from red to green, the ride continues. Changing lanes, different cars, same direction. The movie ends with a picture Bill Hicks himself and he talks about the insignificancy of his speech for the major popularity thus he states that he has to explain the point.

I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed filming it.

Cheers !
