Or, as they were called on this release, The Southern Harmonaires. The group had recorded various songs (R&B as well as gospel) under four different names for various New York studios on one October day in 1950. They were trying to sidestep contractual problems. This one was from the last session and they must have been tired, but they still sung beautifully.
In later times they also took on yet another identity when they later turned to R&B and became The Larks.

  • Is this group from Columbus Ohio? Their was a group of men called the Harmonaires that were friends of my father. This would be in th 40's sound the same

  • No, they were based in North Carolina. They usually called themselves the Selah Singers. I haven't heard Ohio's Harmonaires but I think they sang barbershop like the Mills Bros.

  • Thurmon was a dear friend of mine, and I miss him dearly.

I hope Blinky, Petey, and all his children are doing well.

  • This is sooo nice!!! That sounds like Eugene Mumford. This group would become the Larks on Apollo. T Ruth would record an LP on Sam Cooke's SAR label in 1961 Called "Laughs From The Pulpit. Great LP...

  • I am T Ruth's granddaughter, Thank You for Posting this. It's an honor to carry on his musical legacy

  • Thurman Ruth had a gospel radio program on WSRC in Durham, N.C. I had heard about the Selah Singers from my father. T Ruth reformed the group and made "That Awful Day in Dallas" after President Kennedy's assassination. He later moved to New York.

  • They did a few songs with Mahalia as well...

  • They were on an album with Marian Anderson that I found recently. They are not easy to find.

  • Beautiful.
